As Hunter S. Thompson said, “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro”.* What do conservatives do in a post-election world, where Congress and the White House are firmly under Democrat control, Ann Coulter’s latest tome is tanking, and Bill O’Reilly seems positively subdued? Turn up the weirdness to 11!
Enter Glenn Beck: Two months into his gig at Fox, he’s already drawing an average of 2.3 million viewers a night. He spends his show delivering 20-minute long harangues, frequently bursting into tears and making bizarre, unverifiable claims, such as that FEMA is constructing concentration camps for conservatives. Because he can’t debunk it, it must be true!
Beck is a master of cognitive dissonance. While he says “I say on the air all time, ‘if you take what I say as gospel, you’re an idiot.’”, he also claims to believe every word he says. He makes the usual wingnut claims that Obama is a Marxist Swedish Socialist Commie, while also saying he’s a fascist — and for bonus contradiction-within-contradiction, he clarified “I don’t mean the Adolf Hitler kind of fascism”, while hilariously ranting over video of goose-stepping Nazis and fearfully crouching at the bottom of the screen as if he expected a jackbooted Obama to jump out at him.
Obama = Hitler a little too pedestrian for you? How about Obama = Edward Cullen? He even has visual aids!
I love this guy! While Bill-O’s tirades have gotten stale, and Hannity has too much of the glazed glow of a true believer to be anything but creepy, Beck is definately the poster boy for the new, spiralling-into-ridiculous-irrelevancy movement of the post-2008 conservative base. May he continue to amuse and amaze for years to come!
